About Hazels

The story of Hazel starts with a painting, a friendship, and one very special coincidence.

Years ago, while on a regular visit to the Tantallon Library with our young daughters, we noticed a gallery exhibition featuring local artists. Among the artwork, we spotted a portrait of a woman we didn't know, but something about her caught our attention. We loved the painting so much that we decided to bring her home with us to Indian Harbour.

Later, we connected with the artist, Andrea Redmond, and discovered that the woman in the portrait was Andrea's grandmother, Hazel. Then came the really incredible part. Hazel had once owned and lived in the very same house that we called home.

Andrea's artwork became a huge part of our world, and a big part of Rhubarb, too. Her paintings brought so much colour, personality, and a little bit of Andrea herself into the restaurant. We were lucky enough to call her a dear friend, and her passing in 2014 left the world feeling less bright.

So when it came time to dream up this next chapter in Liverpool, it felt important to bring a little bit of Andrea along with us. And what better way to do that than by naming the restaurant after the woman whose portrait started this whole story in the first place?

Hazel was a woman we unknowingly welcomed into our home. Her granddaughter became a dear friend. Her artwork became part of our lives and our restaurant. And somehow, all these years later, it has brought us right here.

We couldn't think of a more fitting name for this new adventure.
